Case and Revolver Inscribed “H. St C. Hammill R.N.”

Serial Number 5828 (1855)

Hugh St Clair Hammill RN was born in 1843, in Liverpool, England, to John and Anne Elizabeth Hammill.   He joined the Royal Navy as a Lt Cadet on 4th September 1858 on HMS Illustrious, aged 15, where he served until 31st December 1858. He transferred to HMS Britannia on 1st January 1859 until 21st April 1859 for 7 days (HMS Victory was a training ship at this time).   Joined HMS Doris on 7th May 1859 and was promoted to mid shipman on 20th July 1860.   On 30th October 1860 he transferred to the Royal Navy Flagship HMS Narcissus, where he died on full pay on 7th March 1863, aged 19.

This a crisp revolver with an inscribed back strap and a very good action.   The barrel retains traces of original finish and has a good bore.   The cylinder is clear and the frame retains a faded case colour.   All the screw heads are clean.   The back strap and trigger guard retain 85% of the original silver plating.   All matching numbers and the markings are clear.   The walnut grip, numbered to the gun, retains 90% original varnish.

The revolver is housed in its original case, which has an inscribed ring handle.   The case is complete with mould, key, cleaning rod, spare Colt nipples, “Colt Pocket Flask”< by James Dixon and a 500 count cap tin./p>

A very interesting original cased set.
