This carbine is one of approximately 12,000 Model 1860 Civil War carbines that were refurbished at the Springfield Armory after the war. The original 6-grove 22in carbine barrels in 52calibre were drilled out and a new 50calibre 3 grove sleeve were brazed into the barrel. The guns were rechambered for the 56-50 Spencer cartridge.
The Stadler Magazine cut-off device was installed on all arms, a new inspector's cartouche was stamped on the refurbished model 1860 carbine stock that of Springfield Armory Master armorer Erskine S. Allen ESA.
This example is in very good condition retaining most of its refurbished finish with a very good tight action and fair bore. The walnut stock and forearm are in very good condition with a clear ESA cartouche.
