The revolver is inscribed "H. B. Barton R.N". Commander Hugh Bradley Barton was born on the 27th September 1858 in Etchingham, East Sussex, England the son of Robert G. Barton and Louisa Amelia (Bent) Barton. He enrolled in the Royal Navy on the 15th January 1872 aged 13, ranked 23 of 39 successful candidates for Navel Cadetship, passed Royal Navy College in December 1879, "in December 1881 was noted to have an excessive wine bill".
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the 29th July 1883, in July 1888 he suffered a retinal injury. He completed a one year appointment as First Lieutenant on the turret ship HMS Dreadnought. Was appointed to Devonport Barracks and after some time in the Coast Guards, Barton was place on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on the 13th October 1902. Commander Hugh Bradley Barton committed suicide "whilst of unsound mind" on the 16th October 1921.
The revolver manufactured in 1872 has the 4½ in barrel with the rare fluted cylinder of which only 2500 were produced, and was sold in England through Colts London Agency. The revolver is in very good condition retaining over 50% of its original finish with a very good action and cylinder lock up. It is complete with its Colt London Agency oak case, pewter oil bottle cleaning rod and turn screw.
